Avoid Hand Lotions That are Occlusive
Most lotions and salves tout the benefits of occlusivity (trapping moisture in the skin to make it appear soft and moist). Although this can provide short term relief for those who have seriously dry and cracked skin, the long term effects are not very desirable. Continually trapping moisture in the skin creates a barrier that prevents skin cells from "eating" and "breathing." In other words, they cannot take in oxygen and remove wastes. Consequently, the pH balance of the skin becomes severely disrupted and the skin cells literally "dry up."  The skin is no longer able to create its own moisture, and individuals often find themselves dependent on lotions and creams.
