Vegetarian Protein Shakes and Smoothies for Optimal Nutritional Support!

These vegetarian protein shakes and smoothies deliver a great source of protein and slow burning carbohydrates that will keep you satisfied and energetic for hours. They serve as an excellent meal replacement, especially for those on the go!

Smoothie Essentials:

  1. Sun Warrior Protein (Vegetarian):  Why vegetarian protein over whey? Although we provide whey protein, we feel that vegetarian protein is by far a superior choice. Sun Warrior Protein has a 98% correlation rate to Mother’s Milk, and a 98.2% digestion efficiency rating, making it one of the highest digestibility and efficiency ratings of any other protein source. Most whey products (even clean sources like ours) are very difficult to digest and typically stagnate in the intestines causing putrefaction. Putrefaction of animal protein gives off harmful toxins consisting mostly of nitrogenous wastes forcing the kidneys to work 3-4 time harder than normal. Furthermore, high levels of animal protein cause the kidneys to excrete large amounts of calcium, creating a negative calcium balance. Research indicates that a diet high in animal protein is the leading cause of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney disease, digestive disorders and many of the common illness afflicting Americans today. More and more are coming to realize that a vegetarian diet helps reverse the causes of disease and increases longevity.

  2. Good Fats: Good fats are essential for brain function, nerve function and overall health. Good fat is also ESSENTIAL for the proper digestion of proteins and carbohydrates; you should never make a protein shake without it. Our top choice to add to smoothies and shakes is fat from coconut. Not only does coconut taste great in smoothies, but it is also a rich source of medium chain fatty acids, it's rich in lauric acid (immune boosting) and helps increase the body's natural metabolism. Here are a few varieties from which you can choose: Artisana Coconut Butter (our favorite), Premier Coconut Oil, and coconut milk.

  3. Coconut Juice (Water): What an amazing difference adding coconut water to your shakes and smoothies makes. Coconut juice is low in calories and naturally sweet which decreases your need for added sweeteners. It is high in potassium and magnesium- two essential nutrients in which most people are deficient. It is also high in electrolytes making your shakes an excellent post-workout meal replacement. Also, Sun Warrior Protein has a unique, chalky texture that tastes wonderful when combined with coconut water. When combined with water, Sun Warrior Protein can taste a little bland.

  4. Vanilla Agave Nectar:  Finding the right sweetener can be a difficult task. Too much sugar, even natural sugar, can undo many of the benefits from eating a whole foods, natural diet. Furthermore, many of the "natural" or "raw" sweeteners on the market today are not as beneficial as they may appear. Many Agave products are heated, cut with cheaper sweeteners, or made from less than ideal raw materials. Fortunately, we have found an incredibly delectable raw Vanilla Agave heated below 110º. This keeps the beneficial inulin intact and keeps the glycemic index low. If you choose an Agave Nectar from a store, make sure it says RAW!!! Try not to exceed 1 tbsp. of Vanilla Agave.

  5. Lecithin: Our Lecithin is one of the only soy based products we will ever recommend! It is made from truly organic, non GMO soy. Lecithin adds a creamy, thick texture to your shakes. Among its many benefits, Lecithin is high in inosital and all 4 phosphatidyl complexes for brain and nervous system health. It is also high in choline which helps burn fat.

  6. Tocotriene Complex: Our Tocotriene provides a rich, nutty flavor which is the perfect compliment to smoothies and shakes. It is a super food packed full of antioxidants, amino acids, fatty acids, vitamin E and B, and FOS (fructooligosaccharides) made from chicory. Among its many health benefits, Tocotriene is a highly antioxidant-food that promotes sustained energy and stamina and is excellent for joint health and immunity. Never make a smoothie without it!

  7. Greens Mix: Beyond Organic cereal grasses (barley, oat and wheat grass) that contain every known vitamin, mineral, amino acid and enzyme necessary to sustain life. Blends well and tastes great in smoothies.

  8. Cacao Powder and Cacao Nibs: Delicious super foods high in antioxidants, magnesium, chromium, and much more! Cacao's high magnesium content has been known to improve cardiovascular health, lower blood pressure and lower LDL cholesterol. Adding cacao nibs to your smoothies provides a tremendous amount of fiber, and because it is high in magnesium, it improves peristalsis in the colon. Our Chocolate Bliss is also a fantastic addition to shakes and smoothies.

  9. Salba Seed: (Salvia Hispanica L): A super food with the richest source of omega-3s and fiber in nature. It supports cardiovascular health, joint function and mobility, digestion and natural detoxification. This is an excellent, functional food for diabetics, those suffering from Celiac disease or gluten allergy.

  10. Maca Powder: Often referred to as "Peruvian Ginseng," Maca Powder is a nutritionally dense Super Food that contains significant amounts of amino acids, vitamins, enzymes, and minerals including calcium, potassium, phosphorous, zinc, magnesium, and iron. It is rich in B vitamins, especially B12, which is great news for vegetarians. It's adaptogenic and nutritional qualities makes Maca one of the most superior Super Foods. It has a sweet, nutty flavor and goes well with cacao smoothies.

  11. Galactan™: A great tasting, fiber-rich nutrition from arabinogalactan (8 grams fiber/serving). Supports optimal immune system integrity, healthy, complete bowel eliminations and gastrointestinal health. Arabinogalactan acts as a food supply to friendly intestinal bacteria. Like the well-known fructooligosaccharides (FOS), arabinogalactan is considered a "prebiotic." The non-absorbed fiber is eagerly fermented by gut microflora, resulting in an elevated production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)—primarily butyrate, but also propionate. It is neutral in taste, and goes well in smoothies.

  12. Hemp Seeds: Hemp Seeds are one of the most nutritious foods on the earth. They are an excellent source of perfectly balanced Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) and contain all 10 Essential Amino Acids (EAA's). They have a slightly sweet and nutty flavor, and combined with the right sweetener (Grade B Maple Syrup for example) they taste great in smoothies. They also add bulk and fiber.

A Word of Caution About Adding Fruit to Your Smoothie

Adding fruit is a popular way to improve the taste while adding variety to your protein shakes. Yet understanding how fruits and carbohydrates digest when combined is very important. Fresh, ripened fruits undergo little or no digestion in the mouth and stomach. They move quickly into the small intestine where they undergo the little digestion they require. If fruit is eaten with a different type of food such as a carbohydrate (starch) or protein, it is held up in the stomach along with the starch or protein. This delay causes the fruit to begin to ferment in the stomach, giving rise to acidic byproducts that are less than ideal for intestinal health and optimal digestion. Furthermore, the sugars in the fruit inhibit adequate digestion of the starch or protein.

Although, Sun Warrior Brown Rice Protein is a carbohydrate, we feel that adding a little fruit to your shake will not create the same conditions as mentioned above, because your blended shake will be "pre-digested" before you consume it. Yet in order to maximize digestion, proper fruit combinations will need to be applied. You should only add one or two types of similar fruits to your shake. Sweet fruit with sweet fruit, subacid fruit (berries) with sub acid fruid, and so on. The one type of fruit you should never add to your shakes is Melons- they should always be eaten on their own. Add a handful of fruit, and no more. Use only fresh fruit and avoid frozen fruit.

Other tips for proper digestion of shakes and smoothies:

  • Never add ice, as cold foods slow down digestion.
  • Make sure your first meal has digested before taking in your shake, and wait at least 3 hours before your next meal.
  • Treat your smoothie as a meal. Chew your smoothie well, and avoid gulping it down, otherwise adequate saliva and important enzymes will not be activated.
